Buying a new boat

Obtaining a Bill of Sale

Surprisingly new boats can and often do have a number of faults or omissions and whilst reputable builders will rectify these defects if may be more difficult to address these faults at a later date leading to disputes. Employing a marine surveyor to carry out a pre delivery or delivery inspection can help to ensure that you enjoy your new craft as you should.

When buying a new boat it is important to ensure that a Bill of Sale is issued by the builder or seller, together with a Builder's Certificate, a Certificate of Conformity confirming compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive and finally, a Value Added Tax receipt. Without proof of payment of VAT, an owner may be faced with paying the tax again in another EU country if the boat is taken abroad.
