Case study: GRP Yacht
The following defects were found on a small GRP Yacht:
- The plastic through hull fittings for the cockpit drains are degraded and not of a type suitable for use below the waterline
- The keel and skeg bolts have been subject to corrosion
- The cockpit drain hoses are kinked, reducing their effectiveness and the hose clips are corroded
- The aft plywood bulkhead is extensively weakened by rot and will require replacement
- The forward bulkhead is loose
- One of the plywood floors has disintegrated due to rot and is partly missing
- The cockpit sole gives underfoot as the wooden support structure is weakened by rot and partly missing
- The wood cockpit coaming that in this boat provides anchorage for the sail controls is weakened by rot
- The plywood forehatch has been weakened by rot and is breaking apart
- The stemhead fitting has cracked and part of it is missing
- The pulpit is loose as its through deck fastenings have corroded and failed
- One of the two sail handling winches is seized
- The port and starboard shrouds are kinked, weakened and broken wires are evident in a number of places
- The running rigging is badly degraded
- The tape jackstays are seriously degraded
- Plus a number of less serious defects. It was also found that the boat had no anchor or anchor warp and no safety equipment
